DON’T THROW AWAY OLD COMPUTERS

We’ve been told for decades now, that recycling is important (I’m not getting into this part, there’s a lot of misinformation that makes us feel better about what we do without making any real changes) As a company committed to advancements in green technology and awareness, one of the best ways we as individuals can contribute to a circular economy starts with REDUCING and REUSING FIRST. Recycling comes very last.

I’m known to repurpose all kinds of things from computer parts. That stick of DDr3 ram might come in handy for a customer or even a visual teaching aid. Yes, I’m Frugal!

“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”

-the way we were told but didn't listen.

When your computer is slower than you’d like, or it’s just old and Mac stops giving it updates, or perhaps whats coming with Windows 10 ending in 2025 and leaving a lot of perfectly good intel 7th gen and older systems to go to the trash heap. You can do better than that. It will run Linux just fine for example, or Pfsense. You can convert it into a Server for filesharing, a Professional Stateful Firewall System, a media box to store movies and music, a custom-made DVR, the options are limitless. Very often those motherboards and hardware with no moving parts can live an extremely long time. We are so ready to throw out the old and it hurts society. Who cares if it can’t run the latest games, it can do a lot, don’t throw it out.

These computers can be donated to schools or provided new lives in so many ways. I believe they should be repurposed before they are destroyed and I stand by that. If you want a schoolwork computer for your kid without the gaming distraction, Ubuntu is your answer, its easy for the user, we can provide support for the times you might have trouble, and you get a low-cost system with no licensing fees like Microsoft windows, even comes with its own office suite with equivalents for word and PowerPoint, thunderbird replaces outlook… There’s open source, free equivalents to practically everything and all are available in the Ubuntu software center.

This isn’t limited to just Desktops and Laptops, but also to some network devices too, they can be converted to run certain custom software and expand their capabilities for use as wireless bridges, switches and more. A great way to keep your old WIFI gear running and being useful while improving the stability of your network.

and Lastly: If you don’t feel up to learning a new OS and still want to replace your PC, consider donating to us so we can convert them for needy families who need an affordable computer!

To learn more about our donation program, email us at customerservice@carbondigitalsolutions.com add “Donation” to the subject line.
